Highlight on Muscle Sparing Knee Replacement Surgery

When arthritis-related knee pain progresses beyond conservative treatment plans, knee replacement surgery can provide relief, improve mobility, and increase range of motion. The long recovery required for a traditional knee replacement can be daunting. Unlike a traditional knee replacement, which requires an  5”-8” incision through the quadriceps (the thigh muscles), Dr. Cook offers a newer minimally-invasive quadriceps-sparing approach through a smaller 3”-4” incision that avoids trauma to the quadriceps muscle, the most important muscle group around the knee. This outpatient procedure allows patients to return home the same day, and most patients can bear weight on their knee within a few hours. Importantly, patients who undergo this procedure seem to get muscle strength and control back more quickly than patients who have had traditional total knee replacement. Importantly, the muscle sparing approach uses the same reliable, durable, highest quality surgical implants used in traditional total knee replacement surgery.
